Birmingham’s Civil Rights History

Even though I teach English courses, I always make sure that history gets included in whatever we’re discussing. I usually use Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow in my Composition I course, and one day when it’s safe to travel again, I hope to actually take some students down to Alabama to the Civil Rights Institute. I’ve written some posts about Birmingham from when I went in 2018 to a conference, so you can check those out here and here. I’d never been to Birmingham before and knew Birmingham was the center of a lot of civil rights movements, but I wasn’t quite prepared for how powerful that history can be felt in the city. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I wanted to highlight my visit to the Institute.

The Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, SC

My cousin, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina, got married at the beginning of the year. I always love a visit to Charleston, and since my sister moved from there in mid-2019, I’ve been having some major Holy City withdrawals!

London – Day 7

Thank you all so much for joining me on my recap of our London trip! I hope some of what I’ve shared has been helpful and interesting to you! Continue reading

London – Day 6

No secrets here! This post may contain affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at absolutely no cost to you! Thank you so much for supporting Biscotti and a Ph.D.!

I’m back with another London post! This was our second to last day in London, and we still had so many places and attractions to check off our list. Everyone says you can’t do everything in London on your first visit, and I totally took that as a challenge, but as much as I hate to admit it, they’re totally right. London is one of those cities that it probably doesn’t matter how many times you visit, you’ll never be able to see everything there is to see. But that’s also what makes it such a fun place to visit!

London – Day 5

A day trip to Bath was a really hard journey to follow, but we still had three days left in London to explore, sight see, and eat, of course!

My husband’s parents contributed to a 3-day London Pass as part of his birthday present, so we saved that for our last three days. I’ll make a separate post that gives details and all my thoughts on the London Pass.

As I noted in earlier posts about our London journey, there were several things that didn’t quite go as I had planned, so I was determined to make our last three days flawless (dumb mistake, y’all).

A Day in Bath (London – Day 4)

Hold on to your hats, ladies and gents, because today I’m taking you through a whirwind day in Bath! I’m so excited to share today’s post because visiting Bath was number one on my request list when we visited England, and it was definitely everything I imagined England to be!

Touring London- Day 2

After a good, but hot, night’s sleep (we had the a/c cranked as hard as it would go, and I still woke up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat), we got up early to start the day’s events! I was excited for everything that was in store, but the day didn’t quite end up the way I planned…

Touring London – Day 1

This is technically my second post on London (be sure to check out my previous post on packing and planning!). We arrived in London around 10:30 am on a Monday, so we had the entire day to explore and fight jet lag. Hint: whatever you do, try to get on the schedule of wherever you’re traveling. Do not take a nap, no matter how bad you want one! Getting on a new schedule ASAP is really helpful in preventing jet lag.

San Francisco – Day 3

We were technically in San Francisco for a conference, and I procrastinated (see a theme?) and didn’t get us in the conference hotel. When we showed up at the conference hotel today for my presentation, I had to do a lot of apologizing to J who walked in, looked around, and then gave me the “are you kidding me” look. The conference was held at the Hyatt Regency at the Embarcadero Center area. And it’s beautiful. [This is not a sponsored post, but Hyatt, if you’re reading, I’d be happy to come and stay there *wink, wink*]
