Satisfy a Sweet Tooth in Charleston

I have a massive sweet tooth. I love all food, but it seems like doughnuts, cookies, and cupcakes have a hypnotizing effect on me. My mom is an amazing baker, which is probably the reason I appreciate a moist, buttery cake buried beneath an inch of icing. Cakes in the Lauzon household are no joke. They are also one of the reasons I force myself to run. Continue reading

Trying New Things – Yoga

I know, I know. I’m extremely late to the yoga party. But at least I’m finally showing up. I convinced myself this week that I needed to end my gym drought and make use of some of the classes I was paying for. Since I’m training for the Rock ‘n Roll Savannah half marathon, I figured yoga would be a helpful addition and would force me to do a little stretching (I got scolded at Fleet Feet for being a stretch slacker). I’ve been getting better at working stretching in, but I still forget to do it after runs :\

I have a silly habit of getting nervous about going to places I’ve never been or participating in activities/events that I’ve never done. I think it’s the control freak in me that doesn’t like giving up control and being knowledge-less about the situation – who will be there? will I run into a student? will it be so full that I’ll have to be in the front row? will the instructor be using yoga terms? are there certain yoga clothes I should be wearing so I don’t stand out as the newbie?

Weekend Getaway – Wilmington, NC (Part I)

Earlier in July, I went to Wilmington for the first time with my two best girlfriends. We’ve been friends since college, and I love these two so much. I’m really blessed to have them both in my life.

None of us had been to Wilmington, so we were really looking forward to the trip. We booked a little apartment above the stores downtown through Airbnb. It was a convenient place to stay, but I didn’t sleep much the first night because of all the downtown/bar noise.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t on my blog game and didn’t get very many pictures. But that doesn’t mean I can’t share my food suggestions!

If you visit Wilmington, I suggest an evening stroll on the riverwalk.

Circa 1922 – We had dinner here on Friday, and it was really good! All three of us ordered a hot small plate (spring rolls, pork croquette, and stuffed piquillo peppers), and I highly recommend all of them. For my entree, I had the duck confit, another winner, and for dessert I talked them into splitting the croissant bread pudding (<– get that right now).

The Dixie Grill – We stopped here for breakfast before heading out to the beach, and all three of us were glad we did. I honestly don’t remember what the girls got because I was too focused on my sweet potato pancakes – I didn’t even care if I had pancake belly at the beach!

The Pilot House – Later that evening we wanted something to nibble on and some refreshing drinks, and luckily Wilmington has several options that include a beautiful river view. The Pilot House has a fantastic patio right on the river, so we munched on some Brie and carpaccio, watched the boats go by, and had a perfect sunset.

Food brings out the worst “I’m so excited about digging in” faces in me.

Our Crepes and More – Definitely two thumbs up! Like the name says, this restaurant focuses on crepes, both sweet and savory. I chose the Versailles crepe (strawberries, bananas, Nutella, whipped cream, strawberry syrup, and ICE CREAM). Add this place to your Wilmington list!

What are some of your suggestions for my next visit to Wilmington? It’s less than a two hour drive from me, so I’ll be frequenting this fun place!

DIY Necklace Holder

I love necklaces. The perfect necklace can make an outfit go from “eh” to “ahhh.” But if you’re anything like me, when you get home and make a beeline for those yoga pants and t-shirt (and by that I actually mean rushing to take off that uncomfortable bra – you know it’s true!), your necklaces end up in a pile on your dresser.

This is bad. Do not be like this girl.

Etsy has a ton of necklace holder options that are really adorable, but I wanted something simple that I could tailor to my own tastes and needs…and wallet. Overall, I spent $33 on supplies, and that includes a hand saw for ~$15 which will come in handy (<–see what I did there?) for other projects. Continue reading

Bourbon and Boweties and Moon and Lola Trunk Show

Happy Friday! A few days ago I was checking out a new list of dates and locations that the lovely ladies of Bourbon and Boweties and Moon and Lola had posted for their tour. The stars aligned perfectly because I was planning to visit my sister in Charleston the same day they were making an appearance at Tres Carmen Boutique! This boutique is a little gem on James Island – I had to tear myself away from an adorable pineapple top and keep my eye on the prize – a bangle!

It was so much fun meeting Carley of Bourbon and Boweties and Kelly of Moon and Lola (and the raspberry moscato sangria at the boutique was amazing! We really should have begged for the recipe.). I’m even happier than before to support these two ladies because they’ve taken so much time to tour and hang out with their fans, even powering on after a scary-looking crash. Proof that you can’t keep a good, southern woman down! It’s great to know that the creators of the brands you love are just as sweet and wonderful as they seem in pictures and articles.

I limited myself to one bangle from the new collection, but considering how many times I said “ooh, I like this one,” several more bangles are in my near future.

A new tiger's eye "A" bangle for me, and a palm tree for E.

Be on the lookout for an entire post on bangles soon! Have an amazing weekend!

Travelin’ Tuesday – Charleston

Like most people, I love Charleston, South Carolina. Luckily for me, I have family there, and my sister (I’ll refer to her as  “E”) just moved there this summer (lucky dog!), so I have plenty of reasons to visit. After getting my sister settled, I stuck around for about a month (a huge advantage to teaching at a college) and gained plenty of weight trying out all the food stops. I regret nothing.

One of the great places we tried was 82 Queen. We’d had our brunch eyes on this cute little place, so after church one Sunday, we headed down to the historic French Quarter.
